VIRTUAL WORLD

Virtual worlds are, in essence, meeting places. They are around us and chances are that you have hesitated upon one yourself. The argument of a virtual world is very simple users carry on social activities using their avatars in an open virtual medium. It is not a video game where users play games within the world, and also not a chat room where users are there to conduct discussions.

A virtual world or massively multiplayer online world (MMOW) is a computer-based simulated environment populated by many users who can create a personal avatar, and simultaneously and independently explore the virtual world, engage in its activities or conversation with others. These representation can be textual, two or three-dimensional graphical representations, or live video manifestation with auditory and touch sensors. In common, virtual world allow for multiple users. As virtual world is a general term. The virtual environment supports varying degrees of play and gaming. Some uses of the term include
  • Massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) games in which a large number of players interact within a virtual world. Collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) designed for collaborative work in a virtual environment.
  • Collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) designed for collaborative work in a virtual environment
  • Massively multiplayer online real-life games (MMORLGs), also called virtual social worlds, where the user can edit and alter their avatar at will, allowing them to play a more dynamic role, or multiple roles.





ADVANTAGES OF VIRTUAL WORLD
  • Socializing - Meeting new people and socialize online
  • Education – Creation of computer programming tutorials,virtual libraries etc for education purpose
  • Political Expression – Virtual world can serve as forums for political expression and debate
  • Military Training – Military is also using virtual worlds to the best of their advantage

In addition, virtual worlds can be used to effectively merge media, such as:
  • e-Books
  • Hyperlinked articles
  • Objects to manipulate, such as artifacts
  • Interactive calendars or blackboards
  • Surveys, where feedback is sent via email
DISADVANTAGES OF VIRTUAL WORLD
  • Hardware - Cost Prohibitive and experimental
  • Training –Training with virtual world is not same as training and working with real world
  • Avoiding the Real world – Virtual medium and people often live in virtual world instead of real one.
