Open Education Resource: Moving Beyond Textbooks

Watch this introductory video before reading the blog below

In the past few decades there has been a subtle but steady growth of open education resources over the internet. The schools are aiming at efficient and cost-effective means to provide education and finding alternatives to the over-priced paper based books.

With the growth and advancement of technology at schools this has become possible. Schools have been implementing the Bring Your Own Device policy which has helped the students in many ways. These days schools support and encourages learning from the open source educational websites like edX Courses, Khan Academy, etc. on their personal devices used at schools. This helps the students to download and read contents on their own device at school and home. Thus, we can see the relationship between Bring Your Device and Open Education Resource being implemented parallel.

The technical advancement has helped in education system so much that the students can firstly use their own devices, access open source education sites, use free online tools to collaborative studies, etc.

I will be evaluating some of the Open Education Resources –

edX Courses, it is a non-profit online initiative founded by Harvard and MIT Universities and offers interactive online courses in different fields. The students can register themselves and attend multiple courses and attain certificates. edX also provides online training for some of the technical tools and programming languages. As per my research and understanding, this is ranked # 1 free educational resource.

Curriki, this website is founded and sponsored by some of the IT giants like IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, etc. to curate the knowledge in various disciplines, highlighting noteworthy teachers. They provide a free membership where the users can use Facebook or Google account to register themselves. It provides a well-organized curriculum and an interactive mode of communication.
