An overview of Media in Education

MEDIA
The term media is one way to describe the various kinds of mass communication, such as radio and television, newspapers, movies, magazines, and internet, which reach or influence people widely.

Media used in education
There are major technology trends in education there are as follows:

Personal Access to Mobile Devices: According to the 2013 results, students overwhelmingly have access to personal mobile devices. 89 percent of high schools students have access to Internet-connected smart phones, while 50 percent of students in grades 3 through 5 have access to the same type of devices. Hence this technology not only increases the attention of the students but also makes them to learn new things with the use of this modern technology.


 Use of Video for Class work and Homework: Video is another tool that has been on the rise in recent years. While the presentation focused on students, noted that 46 percent of teachers are using video in the classroom.

        Internet Connectivity:  The statistics showing the ways students generally connect to the Internet when at home. According to the study, 64 percent of students surveyed identify 3G- or 4G-enabled devices as their primary means of connecting to the Internet, with another 23 percent saying they connect through an Internet-enabled TV or Wii console

        Mobile Devices for Schoolwork: According to the 2013 results, students are leveraging mobile devices both to be more efficient in their day-to-day tasks and to transform their own learning processes.
      
         Paying Attention to the Digital Footprint: Digital footprint was a new research area for the 2013 survey nearly Sixty-four percent of high school students responding admitted to being careful about the things they post online and 44 percent of high school students said they believe a positive digital profile is an important part of their future.

Requirements of Media
  Gain knowledge of the historical development of media forms—including but not limited to film, video, television, Internet, and digital text, and the parallel development of critical approaches to studying these media.
   Explore the interactions of mediated communication with the structures of society and the self.
  Analyze the historical, social, cultural, and political contexts within which a mediated text is produced, distributed, and read, including the institutional, industrial, and national or regional conditions of its production and reception.
   Analyze mediated texts with attention to the technological specificity of their medium, to their formal and generic construction, and to the broader intermedial movement of texts and ideas.
   Understand and analyze the relationship between media texts and critical theory.
   Conduct original research by finding, reading, and assessing appropriate sources for the support of an idea, and place their own analyses into conversation with a field of works of Media.

Advantages of Media:

·         -The common man gets the latest news within a fraction of seconds. The distance is not at all a barrier now. The news they get through media help them in their daily life a lot.
·         Television is quite popular because people can get easy overview from news. Television also entertains and educates people.
·        - Children’s knowledge increases by watching geographical channel, quiz programs and speeches by famous personalities of different fields.
·          -Using the media we can bring out the hidden talent, we can get public opinion about certain events, current issues.
·         We have the latest news and information at the click of the mouse! The Internet is such a medium that it can give many options for the kind of information required.

Disadvantages of Media:
·         Using media for marketing and advertising could be more time consuming than the companies expect.
·         Low Younger audience readership (people between ages 18-24 are not reading the newspaper)
·         Typically high CPM costs and rising production costs (most expensive)
·         Advertisers must buy multiple stations and formats to accumulate audience reach

Conclusion
In conclusion I've observed how media is found in our everyday lives. From music to sports and the internet and beyond it's clearly evident that media plays an important role in our everyday lives. We might not be aware of how much interaction we have with the media but after sitting down and thinking about my daily rituals it has become obvious on how much of a role media plays in my life.
